More about motorbike helmets

A motorbike helmet has a hard outer shell and a soft interior for comfort and protection. They are designed to break upon impact and should be replaced after any impact i.e. dropping it, or every three years or so even if it hasn't been knocked about.

To check the fitting of your helmet, follow our top Cheap Bike Gear tips below:-

  • Ask a friend or the sales assistant to try and move the helmet both sideways and back and forth. It should give enough to move slightly, but snug enough that it moves your skin with it.

  • You should not be able to get more than the very tip of your forefinger between the pad on your forehead and your skin.

  • With the chin strap fastened, try to push the motorcycle helmet from front to back and visa versa. This is to check that it isn't going to come off whilst you are in motion.

  • Finally, if you are happy with all of the above, ensure you have an adequate field of view through the visor.

  • Try a selection of different helmet manufacturers to ensure that you have the best possible fit and keep each one on your head for at least 10 minutes, if possible, to discover any pressure points.
